Discovering Cultural Morocco

February 2027 | 12 Nights | Southampton | Balmoral | L2704

ABOUT THIS CRUISE

After the post-Christmas reset, experience a blend of adventure and comfort, with moments that awaken curiosity and offer something new. Morocco’s rich culture promises discoveries at every turn. Meander through Tangier’s bustling medina, alive with enticing scents, vibrant sounds and vivid sights, before heading up to the historic kasbah, or join a tour to the blue-washed alleys of Chefchaouen.

In Casablanca, you’ll find the ornate Hassan II Mosque, while beyond lie the imperial cities of Rabat – with its grand gateways and palm-lined boulevards – and Marrakech, where lively squares and intricate riads invite exploration. Wander winding alleys, savour the bold flavours of fragrant tagines, fluffy couscous and fresh mint tea, and browse souks brimming with colourful wares.

Your host on this cruise

Ingrid Boyd

Host

Ingrid has lived in Brighton (Hove actually!) all her adult life. Having first learnt bridge in the late 70s, she had a 20-year break bringing up her two sons and growing her own business. Ingrid then returned to playing social bridge and club duplicate. More recently she has been directing twice a month at a local club. In 2007 she attended the EBU teaching course and has since been teaching part time. Ingrid likes to enthuse non-players she meets to discover that bridge is fun, fascinating and friendly (as well as, at times, frustrating!), and has recently taught her grandchildren to play Mini Bridge. She started as a team member with Mr Bridge in 2014 and now very much enjoys teaching Beginners’ Bridge for Bernard Magee Bridge.

Lesley Lewis

Host

Lesley Lewis has been married for forty five years and has two sons and two delightful grandchildren, aged 6 and 4. She and her husband live in the New Forest, close to the sea, which enables her to participate in her other hobbies of swimming and walking. She also enjoys tennis and Zumba. Lesley learnt to play bridge in the sixth form of school and it has been her main hobby ever since. She now plays regularly at clubs and in County and National competitions. She retired from being a primary school teacher ten years ago and decided to combine her love of bridge with her profession, so she completed the EBU teaching course and also obtained the Bridge Director’s qualification. Lesley then set up her own bridge classes for beginners and improvers, teaching in clubs and privately, and giving seminars to local clubs, which she finds very rewarding and enjoyable. The majority of her pupils have become long lasting friends who often ask for her advice on bridge. Lesley joined the Mr Bridge team in 2011 and has been involved in weekend breaks, New Year celebrations at Denham Grove and many cruises and trips abroad. She has taught beginners’ bridge on the longer cruises and also hosted, delivering seminars. She has described these times as some of the most enjoyable and rewarding of her life. Since the pandemic, Lesley has contributed to Bernard’s new venture by proof reading, helping with Saturday morning novice classes and playing in the Live Teams. Being a part of the team has been like being part of a family for Lesley, as all the team and clients are friendly, interesting and good fun. She hopes to be able to continue with this for many years to come, under Bernard and Helen’s guidance.

Cádiz

Spain

Arrival – Early Morning  →  Departure – Late Night

One of Europe’s oldest cities, Cadiz is well-known for the golden dome atop the cathedral, which gleams in the pleasant February sunshine. You will be perfectly placed to wander through the narrow streets of the old town or ascend the 173 steps of the former watchtower, Torre Tavira, for outstanding views across the city. There will be opportunities for you to witness a traditional Flamenco show in its place of origin and dine at authentic tapas bars, offering delectable small plates like fried anchovies, garlic prawns, and shrimp fritters, accompanied by local wines or the famously sweet and nutty-tasting Jerez sherry.

TANGIER

Morocco

Arrival – Early Morning  →  Departure – Early Evening

Tangier is the gateway from Europe to Africa, due to its location on the Straits of Gibraltar, and has seen rapid progression into a cosmopolitan city, whilst still retaining its history. The Medina is situated within the walls of a 15th century Portuguese fortress, and is a labyrinth of market stalls and cafés, where the popular Moroccan mint tea is often served. Gunpowder tea first arrived here in the 18th century, and where locals added fresh mint and sugar – this refreshing drink is now available throughout Tangier.

Ceuta

Spain

Arrival – Early Morning  →  Departure – Late Afternoon

Nestled along the Strait of Gibraltar, the autonomous Spanish town of Ceuta is located on a peninsula jutting out into the Mediterranean, offering a blend of fine architecture, intriguing museums, excellent cuisine and stunning natural landscapes. You will have opportunities to explore the Royal Walls of Ceuta, holding over 1,000 years of history, or discover the nearby Parque Marítimo del Mediterráneo, a lagoon-like complex offering relaxation and local restaurants, while its historic centre showcases landmarks like the Cathedral of Ceuta, blending Spanish and Moroccan cultures perfectly.

CASABLANCA

Morocco

Arrival – Early Morning  →  Departure – Late Afternoon

A bustling and cosmopolitan city, Casablanca still offers a taste of its French colonial past, with the art-deco Ville Nouvelle at its centre. The Old Medina is full of crowded streets and tiny shops, and the Hassan Il Mosque dominates the city, where the 210m minaret – the tallest in the world, shines a laser beam at night pointing towards Mecca. This breathtaking building can accommodate 25, 000 worshippers, with a further 80, 000 in the courtyard.

Matosinhos is a delightful town to explore, where a winter stroll along the promenade offers a laidback atmosphere and a lovely beach located just outside the town. Venture further afield to Porto, and you’ll be offered opportunities to explore the narrow, cobbled streets and colourful houses of Ribeira, or perhaps take a boat trip along the Douro River to witness scenic landscapes of terraced vineyards and traditional wine estates known as quintas. Meanwhile, the city is well known for its production of Port wine, which can be sampled at one of the many wine cellars, or for enjoying Porto’s signature dish, Francesinha, a mouth-watering hearty sandwich of meat covered with melted cheese and a hot, thick sauce in an authentic Portuguese restaurant.
